Although oats contain melatonin, a substance that prepares the body for rest, its highly soluble structure has negative effects. By eating oats just before going to sleep, the body does not have enough time to assimilate it. This results in acid build-up and/or bloating.
Most salads are natural diuretics. A diuretic has the effect of facilitating the excretion of water through the kidneys. Eating salad just before going to sleep may require you to get up several times during the night. Broccoli, cabbage, peas, cucumbers and garlic are difficult to digest. Therefore, it is best to avoid Mother Nature’s products a few hours before bedtime.
3. Ice cream
The large amount of sugar and protein in ice cream stimulates the brain and can keep your body awake for hours. The fat content of these little treats takes a long time to be burned by your body. Not to mention that these kinds of treats are not healthy when the sugars turn into fat.
4. Spicy food
Although spices can cure some diseases, it is not advisable to eat them late at night. A study that was published in the International Journal of Psychology has shown that eating a highly spicy or pungent food can lead to stomach problems. The substances found in spices activate the brain and keep you awake all night long.
5. Food rich in carbohydrates and sugar
Sweets such as chocolate cake, cookies or other desserts increase blood sugar levels and maintain energy. If eaten late at night, simple sugars such as fructose found in fruit, lactose from dairy products, maltose and sucrose can disrupt sleep cycles.
6. Red meat and other protein
When red meat is eaten late in the evening, it is not digested in time and will remain in the stomach all night. If you still want to eat protein, choose turkey fillet or yoghurt instead.
7. Fatty food
Fatty food makes the stomach work overtime. Pizza for example, with its layer of tomato sauce and cheese slices, has a high acidity level that can cause acid reflux.
8. Dark chocolate
One of the ingredients in dark chocolate is caffeine. Together – with other stimuli such as the bitter taste of theobromine, anandamide or phenyl ethylamine, which gives the impression of pleasure – it stimulates your heart.
Alcohol consumption should be limited to one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men, according to American heart specialists. Studies have shown that alcohol has an influence on sleep cycles. Drinking alcohol before going to sleep results in you waking up spontaneously in the middle of the night. If you want to sleep well, you should therefore say goodbye to your “nightcap”.
Caffeine is a good way to start the day, less to end it. It is a stimulus that encourages brain activity and even increases it. Caffeine enters the body through blood flow. And if we know that the cup of coffee we had after lunch is still in our body in the late afternoon, it is wiser to refuse the evening coffee.
